New Statesman New Media Awards comprise of six awards.

Overall Merit Award
Do you know about an original or visionary project? Are you aware of an incredible initiative that employs dynamic and fresh ways of thinking to connect citizens together or empower individuals? The Judges will reward an individual or project, from all nominations received in 2002, whose work, in its excellence, shows an active path towards an interconnected, fully-informed society. The New Statesman will publish a profile of the winner and his or her work in a special edition of the magazine.

Advocacy award
Everybody has opinions. But in this category, we want to uncover those organisations that grasp new technologies and formulate innovative ways to get people to consider another point of view. We would like to hear about those new media projects or ventures that work to promote a public understanding of certain issues and try to change the climate of opinion. Entries for this award are not restricted to net activism or campaign organisations. They can include lobbying firms and corporate affairs departments.

E-Government award
What can you do online? Pay your council tax or parking fine? Find out information about education, health or new legislation? This category rewards those local or central government departments or agencies that use new technologies to deliver their services to citizens more effectively. The e-government award focuses on those ventures that clearly demonstrate their commitment to providing the best service to citizens.

Elected representative award
Involvement is the theme of this award. We want to hear about elected individuals that use new media tools to engage citizens - not necessarily his or her constituents - more deeply in civic society. You could nominate elected individuals that reach out to connect with citizens over various issues, local or national concerns. Does your MP have a space where you can register your voice, discover how they represent the area and just learn a little more about them as people?

Education award
A new media initiative, committed to education or lifelong learning, carrying out its purpose in an unusual or alternative way: do you know of one? If so, your nomination belongs here. It is all about education in this category. Schools, colleges and universities, as well as commercial websites or ventures, are all eligible. The nomination could be for a venture that provides homework support, degrees online, information for parents . . .

Online communities award
Shared interests help people to communicate. New media enables individuals to shrink the physical distances that separate them. The result falls into this category. This award is for those organisations that utilise new forms of media to create a space where people can connect with others, providing support, information and advice for each other across the world. If you know of any online communities that enhance and enrich society through their use of new media technologies to reach out and simply connect, nominate here.

Nominations close 31 May 2002

A distinguished panel of judges will choose the award winners.

Winners will receive their awards at a special event in July 2002. Check back here for more details in spring 2002. Details of the winning projects will feature in a special edition of the magazine, and the winning websites or new media projects will feature on www.newstatesman.co.uk for a year.
