Manu Chao has announced the release of two albums and a live DVD from his back catalogue on Because Music on the 30th June. The New Statesman has prizes to give away to five lucky winners!

World music icon Manu Chao isn't nearly as famous in the U.K. as he is in Latin America, but his small yet enthusiastic British following is expected to grow exponentially following the release of 'La Radiolina', his first full-length studio album in six years. His most ambitious solo effort to date, the record audaciously combines rock, rap, reggae and revolutionary politics to become what UK's Uncut magazine called "a global rock mission statement."

The album bears the fingerprints of producer Mario Caldato, who has helped such high-profile musicians as the Beastie Boys and Beck find their respective sounds. Also audible throughout the record's intricately layered tracks is the influence of the Clash's Joe Strummer, Chao's friend and mentor.

  • *Chao appears on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury on the 28th June and headlines the Jazz/World Stage on the 29th June
  • *Headlines Lovebox on 19th July
  • *And performs on ‘Live at Abbey Road’ Channel 4 - 26th July

The New Statesman is giving away a collection of special prizes to celebrate the release of La Radiolina in the UK. Each of the five lucky winners (drawn at random) will receive copies of the latest album La Radiolina; two back catalogue albums reissued on Monday 30th June - Proxima Estacion: Esperanza and Radio Bemba Sound System, and limited edition Manu Chao shirts. The first three winners will also receive a copy of the Politik Kills remixes on 12" vinyl!

For a chance to win, simply send a correct response to the following question:

Through which war-torn country did Chao and his band travel in 1993, in an old train, via disused railway tracks, stopping off to play impromptu concerts for peasants, guerrillas and drug traffickers?

GOOD LUCK!! The competition closes on Monday the 14th of July.
