This year for the first time, all six Upstart award winners will be travelling to San Francisco to attend the fifth annual gathering of the Social Enterprise Alliance entitled,” Leading a Community for Sustainable Nonprofits”.

The alliance is the only US membership organisation devoted exclusively to building sustainable non-profits through earned income strategies. Members are mostly practitioners and grantmakers; the remainder are academics, technical consultants and for-profit businesses.

Over three packed spring days of events and social enterprise visits, the Upstarts winners will actively learn about the well established US social enterprise scene and network with delegates from all over the world. They will return to the UK with new ideas and renewed energy and commitment.

Conference sessions will include:

  • Introduction to Earned Income Strategies: Organizational readiness

  • Introduction to Earned Income Strategies: Culture/Board buy-in

  • Introduction to Business Plan Development: Asset Identification/feasibility

  • Our Biggest Mistakes and the Lessons We've Learned

  • Collaboration between non-profits

  • Seed capital strategies for start-ups

  • E-business models and social enterprise

  • Layman's guide to understanding financials

  • Keeping your personal balance

  • Community Development Corporations and different forms of enterprise development
  • Full details of the trip and full conference details will be posted on this page closer to the event.
